My experience installing and using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on a Dell Precision 7520 used with a docking station and (at work) using a 32" HP 2560x1440 monitor and (at home) a 27" ASUS 4k monitor.
I find the 4k monitor to be less than useful due to the tiny-ness of everything on the screen. But the HP monitor works great. (update: setting the resolution of the 4k screen to 2560x1440 works great)
Initial install and setup steps:
2nd attempt to install ubuntu 18.04 lts on dell precision 7520 laptop;
previous attempt failed with hang ups; so tried the nomodeset option this time and it seems to have worked ok;
at ubuntu boot up menu; type 'e' to enter edit mode on boot up options; on the line that starts with 'Linux', after the quiet and before the splash keywords, type in 'nomodeset'; press F10 to boot up;
choose 'normal install' and 'download updates while installing' check boxes;
'erase disk and install ubuntu'; no encryption at this time nor LVM;
after install, reboot; settings/set all to my preferences; check for updates;
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
gave an error msg about needing to upgrade/update versions of many packages; then the software updater came up and prompted to install the already downloaded packages; installed these and reboot;
get the normal walk thru of updated features; last was several featured apps;
reboot; check for updates thru apt-get/sw updater; none found;
open terminal; add to dock; config size/colors/font;
one thing I have noticed is that there are video issues; while moving mouse around in an active window (inet browser or some other app) I notice that there is a rectangle area of another window that is flashing on and off; so install nvidia drivers and see if this fixes this issue; (Seems to have fixed it)
install the nvidia video drivers for ubuntu;
How to install the NVIDIA drivers on Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver Linux
https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-the-nvidia-drivers-on-ubuntu-18-04-bionic-beaver-linux
$ ubuntu-drivers devices
$ sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall
reboot; then no screen output; laptop was in docking station; open laptop and then main external screen came up; logged in went to settings/devices/displays; selected my hp32" external monitor and clicked use single display then apply; seemed to set these settings ok but now no mouse control; pushed the power button and used cursor keys to restart; it all came up ok and is working normally now;
install my normal cloud file storage host "MEGA"; (mega.nz) works good so far; they do give you 50gigs but previously when I had about 20-30 gigs in storage and in the .debris folder were all my deleted files, it all added up to over the 50gigs allotment; so I went thru a real conniption fit to delete down under the limit; but then I kept getting prompted to upgrade to the pro version for monthly payment; I was finally able to get to a level below 1gig and I am only storing my necessary text and log files and it has been working ok; if I install a new OS and start using that, then I just copy the current contents of my MEGA folder from another of my daily-use hosts to my new one and then install MEGA and sync and it pretty much realizes that it doesn't need to copy over very many files. Working good for me.
browser; mega.nz; click the "Desktop App" in upper tool bar and select the megasync version for Ubuntu 18.04.
next step; install UltraEdit UEX on ubuntu 18.04 (pretty much a manual install process because of all dependencies;
(Update: new version of UEX is released which installs just fine with no dependency issues seen-so I have removed the following section about how to install UEX with the dependencies)
vmware horizon view client & virtualbox;
I was able to install VMware Horizon View client no problem;
But not able to install VMware Workstation 14.x; just doesn't install and no useful message as to why not.
So I installed virtualbox instead and migrated my original LinuxMint18.3/VMware Workstation/Windows10-enterprise VM and it is now working in virtualbox. I use it every day.
