 So I downloaded the latest Ubuntu 25.04 OS ISO on April 17th, the first day available and wrote the ISO file to my flash drive using RUFUS on my windows11 laptop.

I installed it to my working hardware system (see below for specs) after backing up all data and installing with wiping the ssd drive for a fresh install.

Welcome to Ubuntu 25.04 'Plucky Puffin'
I did a "default" install of 25.04, with these additional options checked:
1) What apps would you like to start with: check "Extended selection"
2) Install recommended proprietary software?: check both "Install third party software for graphics and WiFi hardware" & "Download & install support for additional media formats"

After several days of frustration, I have discovered that remmina ver. 1.4.39 won't run on 25.04, an app I use all the time; I copied over my existing, working under 24.10 remmina connection profiles but they won't work;

Remmina will start up and display "Accept Certificate" screen, and when I click Yes, it displays this message saying:
error:  Could not connect to the RDP server "192.168.3.53" via TLS. See the DEBUG traces from a terminal for more information.

After several days of frustration and so many avenues I went down to try and resolve this issue, what worked for me was to completely uninstall the remmina app on my system and install the flatpak version of remmina (ver 1.4.40); this works normally and as expected.  https://www.remmina.org/how-to-install-remmina/

I'm not sure if there is some problem with the 1.4.39 version; I didn't try specifically testing for this, if 1.4.40 resolved some issue on previous.

Some different things I tried to resolve;
1) install openssh-server on my win11 laptop, the current and only target I use here at home.  After installing openssh-server on both my 25.04 & win11; no joy
2) completely uninstalled remmina and reinstalled (several times); I also installed Ubuntu 24.10 just to check out if my hardware was to blame; but it works as expected on 24.10.
3) so next thing to check; if this remmina a snap install? check /home/dave/snap and see if there is that folder there; NOPE;   how to check if an app package is installed?
$ apt list --installed | grep remmina and this showed that it was probably installed from .deb file;
4) Remove the remmina app completely;   $ sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove remmina
5) tried installing 24.10 and then upgrading to 25.10; NOPE; and remmina would not even start up at all!
6) I tried setting the debug vars G_MESSAGES_PREFIXED=all & G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all;  and looked at this /tmp/remmina_log_file.log  ;looked at this log file but no obvious error/warn msgs; the extra debugging messages did not give me any clues as to resolve this.
7) Then followed these steps found on this web page:
How to install Remmina  https://www.remmina.org/how-to-install-remmina/
(you first have to install the flatpak app: $sudo apt install flatpak)
--- FLATPAK section ---
After this install, I can search for 'remmina' and it shows up and I can start it up and pin the app icon to the dock; and it works as expected using my previous connection profiles.

Here is my current hardware; probably look to pick up new, updated, latest gen hardware in the near future.
CPU0: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-11900K @ 3.50GHz (family: 0x6, model: 0xa7, stepping: 0x1
DMI: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. Z590 UD AC/Z590 UD AC, BIOS F2 01/06/2021
2x16gb DDR4 3600 dimms, total of 32gigs ram
2tb NVMe SSD
NVIDIA Corporation GP104 [GeForce GTX 1070] using the nouveau driver;
(I'm not much of a gamer)

Some commands and links I found useful;
apt list --installed |grep remmina

pkill remmina
ps -ef |grep remmina

sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove remmina

sudo find / -name "*remmina*"

How to install Remmina
https://www.remmina.org/how-to-install-remmina/

after upgrade install from 24.10 to 25.04 completed and rebooted, remmina would not startup at all; dead; so completely remove remmina;
https://askubuntu.com/questions/187888/what-is-the-correct-way-to-completely-remove-an-application#187891

google: HOW TO compeletly uninstall remove purge remmina from ubuntu 25.04
and upcomes the AI Overview
To completely uninstall Remmina from Ubuntu 25.04, including its configuration files, use the following command in the terminal:
sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove remmina
Alternative Method (if installed from Snap or Flatpak):
If you installed Remmina using Snap or Flatpak, you'll need to use the appropriate uninstall commands:
    Snap: sudo snap remove remmina.
    Flatpak: flatpak uninstall org.remmina.Remmina.

Important Note:   Using the sudo apt-get purge command will remove not only the application but also its configuration files, ensuring a clean removal. The --auto-remove option will remove any dependent packages that are no longer needed after Remmina is removed.

My Thinking About This Issue, et al:
[I sometimes think I am the only one having these types of issues; for example, I have used ultra-edit text editor for decades, but starting in about 22.04 and on, the clipboard does not work as expected; when I ctrl-v in uex from another source (webpage, article, other text editor) it doesn't paste the text into the uex file; I contacted the vendor but they had not heard of that problem; I have since discovered it appears to be a problem with the Gnome desktop as other desktops do not exhibit this clipboard issue.

And when I first started having this issue with remmina, and searched for the "Could not connect to the RDP server "192.168.3.53" via TLS. See the DEBUG traces ... but I did not find any current posts; all were years old, with similiar wording]

Craigslist delight: 2 AMD MB/CPUs and getting them all to work together

This is my exciting time & effort with two AMD cpus and MBs.

I had been searching for a used case to build a new system, exact hardware to be what I could find on craigslist & ebay & newegg, et al.

Started out with craigslist.com post for $60 for iBuyPower case including a non-working MB (ASRock B450M-IBW) & AMD 3 3200G CPU. Interested, because I am always looking for parts for my next build. (I take great delight in building systems and working with computers) And maybe this "non-working" MB is something I could fix and get it to work.

Offered $50 and they accepted; I was told this was her son's gaming pc but it had stopped working; the repair shop wasn't able to get it working again. So when I got the case/MB/CPU home, I took the cooling fan off and removed the CPU only to find that there were numerous bent pins. Too Bad! (not sure who the guilty party was to bend so many of the pins.)

 I bought a magnifying stand with light and attempted to straighten the bent pins, but, alas, it was just too fine a work for my eyes and the tools I had.

So another  craigslist.com posting for an AMD 7 2700X cpu to $80 and I picked this up and tried it in the non-working MB. No joy. (this cpu wouldn't work with this MB's BIOS version)

Next, purchased an inexpensive Gigabyte B450M DS3H WIFI MB and tried the 2700X cpu in that, only to finally discover that this specific CPU wouldn't work in this MB with its current BIOS F62 07/13/2021. (note to self: next time, check BIOS compatibility with specific AMD cpus beforehand!) so I needed to get an amd cpu that would work with this bios, so I went to ebay.

On ebay.com I bid and won a boxed AMD 3 3200G CPU (which I checked would work with this MB and BIOS level) and this worked and allowed me to update the BIOS to work with the AMD 7 2700X cpu.

Google search: gigabyte b450m ds3h wifi bios update at this URL:

https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Motherboard/B450M-DS3H-WIFI-rev-1x/support#support-dl-bios and download the latest version F64d 2022/07/20.

And CPU support list for this MB/Bios:

https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Motherboard/B450M-DS3H-WIFI-rev-1x/support#support-cpu

This worked; updated the bios on this GB B450M DS3H WIFI MB using the 3 3200G cpu and now the AMD 7 2700X cpu works in this MB.

Then plugged the AMD 3 3200G cpu into the original "non-working" MB and it came up. What Joy!! This is very cool. So now I have two, working MB & AMD cpu systems.

The original MB came with one stick of AData 8gb dimm, so to match it up I found an almost identical AData 8gb dimm on ebay and purchased it. System #1 3200G is viable; system#2 2700X is viable but needs an additional video card to work.

I previously had acquired two amd stock cooler fans from somewhere and now they will be used for these two systems.

Additional craigslist searches revealed another computer case (red NZXT) and I picked it up for $40.

Now I have two cases and two hardward assemblies to go in these cases. Both have 2x8gb dimms, 512gb nvme boot unit, windows 10 pro OS oem versions; (greg salazar utube videos pointed me in the direction of his source for cheap win 10 pro licenses).

Now to figure out what to do with these two systems.

Finally figured out how to configure a working RDP session on this new Ubuntu 22.10 OS version install

2025-04-30:

Now I have just configured for one Ubuntu 25.04 system to another Ubuntu 25.04 system and the remote desktop link in in Settings/System/Remote Desktop. Again, it doesn't work until after I rebooted the system. Both of them.

After going thru the steps in this URL website:

https://linuxhint.com/enable-remote-desktop-ubuntu-access-from-windows/

(which is not specific to Ubuntu 22.10 version) I noticed at the bottom this essential step:

"For the changes to take effect, restart your computer."

After rebooting, now RDP from windows 10 and from MacBook Air OS is not only opening the desktop window on my ubuntu 22.10 host, it also allows the kb and mouse to work. Previously, the remote desktop window would open but kb and mouse were not working.

REBOOTING is the final step to make it all work! Again, I'm a happy camper.

So I spent a lot of wasted time because I didn't reboot after configuring the Settings/Sharing/Remote Desktop section; also, I had to modify the default password assigned to my userid and change it to one I could actually use.

Ubuntu 22.04 and Firefox woes! Now resolved for me after upgrading to Ubuntu 22.10 OS version!!

I originally installed Ubuntu 22.04 when it came out in April 2022, and I noticed that there was a time lag after clicking the firefox icon before firefox came up; it worked ok as I remember after the time lag start.

Next, the symptom was after a new install of 22.04, then when first clicking the firefox icon, the cursor would go around and the firefox app was in the top app bar indicator; but nothing happened; no firefox; this was my experience two times on two different installs.

Thus, I completely removed firefox from snap and downloaded the latest FF*.deb package and installed it to /opt/firefox. Copied one of the /user/share/applications .desktop icons to the desktop, edited it to point to and open this /opt/firefox/firefox app.

So I always had to start firefox from this desktop icon. And FF would not auto-update nor manually update. I had to download the latest .deb package from mozilla and install it to the /opt/firefox folder, copying over the earlier ff version, which preserved my links/favorites, saved passwords, etc.

I think this is the case because when I first started /opt/firefox/firefox app from my desktop icon, it creates a /home/<username>/.mozilla folder, within which is the active ff session.

But as of now (Oct 21st, 2022), having installed the latest Ubuntu 22.10 version, Firefox is working just fine in the default snap installation.

I'm a happy camper!! (even though my idea of camping is to find the nearest hotel closest to my kids and the grandkids when they are actually camping in the woods!!!)

Quick, Easy "youtube-dl" app install on Ubuntu 21.04

NOTICE; this is not revelant any longer; replaced by a nifty utility  yt-dlp/yt-dlp: A youtube-dl fork with additional features ... - GitHub

 I just installed the latest Ubuntu 21.04 OS on my 3+ year old dell precision 7520;

When I tried to go to the original URL I had for youtube-dl app, it didn't work, page not found;

It appears that is is now hosted on github here: http://ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/download.html

This download page is where I got 3 of these 4 cmdlines that install and configure youtube-dl to work properly on my new Ubuntu 21.04 OS install.

These 4 cmds worked for me:

$ sudo apt install curl

$ sudo curl -L https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl -o /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl

$ sudo chmod a+rx /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl

$ sudo ln -s /usr/bin/python3 /usr/local/bin/python    ;not specifically mentioned on this webpage; but without it, I only get an error for python.

$ sudo apt install curl    ;not installed by default;

... <output deleted> ...

$ sudo curl -L https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl -o /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl

... <output deleted> ...

$ sudo chmod a+rx /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl

$ sudo ln -s /usr/bin/python3 /usr/local/bin/python

Without this 4th cmdline, I get this error on running youtube-dl app:

$ youtube-dl -F https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnVnIKTWhNs

/usr/bin/env: ‘python’: No such file or directory

Browse to youtube.com and search for <artist/songOfYourChoice>".

Select the video of the song you want to download from the search results list.

Copy the URL for that video and use the "youtube-dl -F <someURL>" cmdline to see the various options for downloading the mp4 video desired:

$ youtube-dl -F https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnVnIKTWhNs

... <output deleted> ...

$ youtube-dl -F https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnVnIKTWhNs | grep \(best\)

18           mp4        640x360    360p  228k , avc1.42001E, 24fps, mp4a.40.2 (44100Hz), 6.70MiB (best)

I can see that number 18 is the mp4 video I want;

$ cd Videos    ;so the mp4 file will go where I want and expect to find it;

$ youtube-dl -f 18 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnVnIKTWhNs

... <output deleted> ...

Use "Ubuntu Software" to search for and install VLC, my favorite media player; this is a snap install.

Or just use the default video player; VLC is not required.

Now cd to the folder that contains this mp4 file and play it; I right-click the mp4 file and select "play with VLC".

NOTE: I own the original CD that this song was originally released on and I also have purchased this song from Apple iTunes/music; cost about $1.29 as I recall.

I include this post to help others get this utility installed and working with the minimum amount of frustration, which I encountered years ago until I discovered this website with the "CORRECT" install/configure steps.

Ubuntu 20.04 daily build April 1st 2020 on Dell Precision T5600 tower

Switched to a different computer; Dell Precision T5600
Ubuntu 20.04 daily build April 1, 2020

installed Ubuntu 20.04 daily build (dated 4-1-2020) noticed some changes/additions to look and feel from previous versions.

When booting up from the flash drive, it went to a black screen/white text and some kind of disk check display %xy completed;

Then after install and reboot, it goes to the black screen with white text - remove the install media and press enter; this is different, as well as some changes to the theme/desktop colors;

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Initial things I noticed:
Also, the printer auto-discovery is engaged and flashing different printers it finds; see below.

Software Updater prompts to install updates; installed these updates, not many just some docs.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
1) Configure ssh to allow ssh logins from remote hosts to this host; when trying from remote to this host, get error msg: ssh: connect to host <somehostname> port 22: Connection refused
2) From past experience, just need to install this package "openssh-server" package; this will allow ssh connections.
$ sudo apt-get install openssh-server
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Printer auto-discovery situation; it annoys me that every time I boot up/login I see the several pop-up messages stating that this or that network printer has been added. It would be so nice if this could be configured away. (As of this writing, I haven't figured out how to stop these network printers discovered)

I found a google search procedure for this and tried it on an earlier daily-build; it seemed to work to stop the pop-up messages, but on this computer/OS build, it happens every time I arrive at the login screen.  Sigh!!

But I still copy the "system-config-printer.desktop" icon from /usr/share/applications folder to my desktop (right-click the icon, copy to the desktop, then right-click the icon on the desktop, and select "allow launching" and now I can start the printer app I'm used to seeing and using. For now, I'm just ignoring the pop-up messages.=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

install youtube-dl;
I have used youtube-dl for several years now and it works for me when I need to have a local copy of a youtube video. Here's the process I follow.

$ sudo apt install curl
$ sudo curl -L https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl -o /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl
$ sudo chmod a+rx /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl
$ sudo ln -s /usr/bin/python3 /usr/local/bin/python

Now you can open youtube.com in browser and search for the video of your choice; when you open the page of the video to download,  in this example, the video URL is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3XPzwjhSZw
 (one of my favorites-"Oye Como Va")

open terminal and cd to the folder of your choice; enter this command to see which available video is the 'best':
$ youtube-dl -F https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3XPzwjhSZw

(the output shows that #18 is the 'best version' to download)
<snip>
18           mp4        360x360    360p  290k , avc1.42001E, mp4a.40.2@ 96k (44100Hz), 8.90MiB (best)

Modify the cmdline to include the number of the 'best' video:

$ youtube-dl -f 18 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3XPzwjhSZw
[youtube] U3XPzwjhSZw: Downloading webpage
[download] Destination: Oye Como Va-U3XPzwjhSZw.mp4
[download] 100% of 8.90MiB in 00:00

NOTE: don't forget the difference of the -F (capital F) vs the 2nd cmdline -f (lower case f).

Then open this mp4 video in the default Videos or VLC (which I always d/l and use.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
install vlc (not included in default ubuntu 20.04 install); open ubuntu software, (takes a while as it says it is downloading the catalog), then search for vlc and install. This is my favorite media player.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Ripping CD's to mp3/oog/flac files
The default media player on Ubuntu 20.04 appears to be Rhythmbox.
Insert CD into player (I know; old school; but I have a lot of CDs and I'm kinda retro myself, ie old!))

Open RB; see the CD title under the "Devices" category; you should see all of the songs and titles; NOTE: I notice that sometimes the CD title lookup does not find the info for the CD; so I sometimes create a win10 VM using virtualbox and use the default windows media player, which has always worked.

If the menu bar is not visible, click on the triple dot ... pattern and it should appear. Extract; you change the ripped format in the preferences area, flac, oog, mp3, mp4 audio.
I noticed that if I selected the mp4 audio format, that when I clicked "Extract" the rb player would crash, exit and prompt to report the crash; flac is working though and oog; but seems slow to me. Windows media player is faster in a win10 VM under virtualbox.

Ubuntu 20.04 daily build experience on dell precision T5810 tower;

20200316:  download latest daily build ubuntu 20.04;
google: ubuntu 20.04 daily build download
URL: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/pending/
date of files is 2020-03-16 08:00; click "64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop image);
using google chrome it starts downloading immediately to my downloads folder: /home/<me>/Downloads/focal-desktop-amd64.iso (2.6gb)
took about 5-7 minutes to download;
long experience has shown me that rufus works "EVERY" time; never had a failure; so I copy this ISO to a windows host and open utility RUFUS to copy to usb flash drive;
using host computer dell precision t5810 tower; turn off secure boot in bios; reboot and F12 to select to boot from this usb drive;
prompt to install ubuntu; boots up into ubuntu gnome desktop;
normal install wizard; I select "Normal Installation" "Download updates while installing Ubuntu" & "Install third-party software for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and additional media formats";
Just for kicks, select the "EXPERIMENTAL: Erase disk and use ZFS"; not that I really know much about ZFS or how to use its features;

after install completes, reboot;
get normal login prompt; enter pw; ok; but now I get a black screen; rebooted to fix but same thing; after login, get black screen; so pushed the power button and it came up to the normal locked desktop screen; enter in pw again for this user efudd and it now shows the desktop; not sure what this is.

Now to start installing/configuring per my needs/desires;
1) install all updates;
2) configure screen saver to wait 60 minutes before locking;
3)

So noticed the icon in the left-side icon bar and removed the usb flash drive; the icon did not go away and won't eject and go away; so rebooted; now back to square one; after pw and enter, screen goes to black; haven't found a way to get around this;

press ctrl + alt + F5 to get terminal; login ok;
# lshw | less
and scroll down to see the Nvidia card model info;
GM107GL Quadro K620

or use this better form of the lshw cmd;
# lshw -C display
this gave me the model number;

tried installing a prior version of nvidia driver (430; vs the 440 installed)
this did not work;

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- then used cmds from this site to remove nvidia drivers;
How to uninstall the NVIDIA drivers on Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa Linux
Lubos Rendek
https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-uninstall-the-nvidia-drivers-on-ubuntu-20-04-focal-fossa-linux
The following commands will remove the proprietary Nvidia driver:
$ sudo dpkg -P $(dpkg -l | grep nvidia-driver | awk '{print $2}')
$ sudo apt autoremove
Then, switch back to nouveau driver:
$ sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
when I ran this nouveau install cmd, msg was it was already installed and latest version.
Reboot your system;
login ok to desktop; yea;
Once your system has rebooted confirm loaded nouveau modules:
$ lsmod | grep nouveau
